Title: Amilcar C6 WIP
Post by: Szymon Kubicki on October 17, 2020, 08:52:38 pm
Here are some screenshots of my current work in progress, a high poly Amilcar C6 from 1928. The aim is to create an impression of a barn find, dusty & rusty - we'll see how it pans out (for now I'm just using some generic bump and roughness maps, but final texturing will probably be done in Substance Painter). The geometry is 95% ready and it's mostly unwrapped. I'd like use this model to learn rigging, so it'll add to the time needed to finish it, but still I think November / December is realistic. With heavy texturing, it could be a nice object to play with in OBJ Reader.

Astonishing work Szymon, it looks very promising, shall be probably one of your greatest model !!!

Thank you for giving me the chance to see it first !

Hello!
The Amilcar will soon be rendered in a high poly form - I'm working on the shaders and lighting now. Trying to decide whether bright background works better than dark.
However, there are still some modeling bugs that I need to fix before final rendering...

In my opinion the brighter mode would help to better see the details.

How large is the current 3D file (blend, c4d, fbx), and how many vertices, indices, meshes in it ?

Thank you for the preview!

Thank you for your suggestion!
The C4D file is 287 MB, a bit over 2,7 mln vertices. I expect the mid poly version to end up around 300k verts.

The high poly works just fine in OR, however i have to make several changes to the C4D project in order to convert the missing corona materials into OR textures.

I am using this link to better figure what to do:
https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/20099/lot/220/

The current size of the OR .obj file is 597 Mb, with 60 meshes and 60 materials.

Here is a rough screenshot of what i have done so far.

Looking good! It's awesome how OR manages to cope with such a polygon count.

Your Amilcar is not a problem for OR (i have much larger model), it can render it in animated mode at 75 FPS.

Your model meshes are absolutly perfect, and after merging them i only found 2 normal errors to fix.

See the attached screenshots with my custom texture set.

Gorgeous ! Now I think I should have made the rear end of drivetrain, at least the differential, to make the model look more complete internally...
I see that you have placed the color logo on the tire sidewall at the same spot as the embossed logo - that makes sense, although in reality they are in different places (and to be honest the embossed sign that I placed on the displacement map should be different from the color logo, but I have not found sufficient reference pictures of it, unfortunately).

75 FPS ! This sounds like a dream (I am comparing it to 5 hours per image that I was getting from Corona and my CPU). Incredibly impressive, really.

Big thanks for sharing your results !

Szymon

Here is a quick video using lighting animation to better see the OR real time ambient occlusion in action.

Very satisfying to watch :)

BTW about the tires, i have removed the flat part, to allow individual mesh rotation if ever we decide to put a pilot in the car ;).

if ever we decide to put a pilot in the car ;).

That is an interesting idea (although admittedly challenging).

I have just seen the final images of the PLEXI project - I love the x-ray effect !

It is very interesting for me to see the modifications you have made to the model - thank you for sharing !
I loaded it into ObjReader and it works perfectly well, I like the result :)

I just found a couple of quad errors + one missing small mesh (investigating).

I shall fix it and post the patch tomorrow.

Good night.

Szymon

Here is the patch to fix the quad errors, and the missing mesh (it was removed by me unexpectedly while editing the meshes).
