It seems like illum 1 tends to suppress the skin material's specular component and texture...

This is by design, because we are under the canopy (no direct lighting source), and i imagine that a Trex (like a lezard) had not a greasy skin.

You're probably right but still some carefully chosen high-Ks specular areas might be welcome IMHO:
